Gabion wall

Gabions are rectangular baskets fabricated from a hexagonal mesh of heavily galvanized steel wire. The baskets are filled with rock and stacked atop one another to form a gravity-type Gabions wall. Gabions depend mainly on the interlocking of the individual stones and rocks within the wire mesh for internal stability, and their mass or weight to resist hydraulic and earth forces. Gabions are a porous type of structure that can sometimes be vegetated. Gabions are considered to be a ?ard?structural solution that has minimal habitat and aesthetic value.

    The protective coating is either:
a. Zinc Coated Box Gabions
b. Zinc Coated Box Gabions with PVC Sleeve
c. Galfan® a Zinc 5% aluminium

Standard sizes in mesh 8, wire diameter 2.7mm
Length m Width m Height m
2 1 1
2 1 0.5
3 2 0.5

Gabions are used to slow the velocity of concentrated runoff or to stabilize slopes with seepage problems and/or non-cohesive soils. Gabions can be used at soil-water interfaces, where the soil conditions, water turbulence, water velocity, and expected vegetative cover are such that the soil may erode under the design flow conditions. Gabions can be used on steeper slopes than riprap and are sometimes the only feasible option for stabilizing an area where there is not enough room to accommodate a ?ofter? vegetated solution.

Gabion Wall is a segmental retaining wall system combining the aesthetics of masonry walls with the engineered reassurance of reinforced earth.

Segmental block retaining walls are increasing in popularity due to their ease of construction, cost-effectiveness and versatility.

The two components of the MacWall system are:

• Split face concrete modular block

• Reinforcement polymer geogrids sandwiched between courses of block

Up to approximately 1m in height, no geogrid reinforcement is required (depending on site conditions) and the interlocked blocks form a mass-gravity structure. Taller walls require geogrid reinforcement.

The geogrids are placed horizontally within the structural backfill to the wall, providing tensile strength and holding the soil mass together. The grids also tie the fascia blocks to the reinforced soil.

5 steps to working with Gabion Wall

1. Project Consultation with Diamond company

2. Indicative Proposal with budget estimates

3. Design and Detail

4. Supply of materials to project site

5. Construction

Attention to detail On infrastructure works, the speed of construction, engineered strength and durability are key parameters.

On commercial, institutional and residential developments, high quality aesthetics,  ease of construction and the ability to form curves, corners and steps are important.

The Gabion Wall system exceeds these requirements as well as being cost effective!
